Should We Use a Steam Room with High Blood Pressure
|
|
Saunas and hot tubs that are provided by various spas and sports clubs are usually employed by
people for relaxation. However, it is common belief that people with high blood pressure should not
use these facilities as these contribute towards increasing the blood pressure. It is true to some
extent as people with severely high blood pressure can encounter some problems. On the other hand,
people whose blood pressure is properly regulated and even if they are taking medications, they can
use steam rooms and saunas.
How to Use a Steam Room with High Blood Pressure
Hypertension patients need to take some precautions before they start the use of steam rooms.
Firstly, it has been stated by the National Centre on Physical Activity and Disability, that a
steam room should be entered after 15 minutes of exercise especially if you are taking medication
for high blood pressure. This is because your blood pressure can drop to a dangerous level on
entering the steam room right after exercise.
If you exhibit symptoms of high blood pressure like shortness of breath, chest pain or
dizziness, then avoid going into a steam room. Every day you need to check yourself for any
symptoms of high blood pressure. The days when you don’t experience any symptoms, you can enter
steam room and on the days when you feel any of the above symptoms, then it is better not to take
steam.
If you are feeling fine, then relax and then enter the steam room. A usual visit should last 10
to 15 minutes. Make sure that you have read the instructions regarding the duration of stay in the
steam room at your spa or sports club.
If you have hypertension, then after the steam session, do not go into a cool swimming pool. You
can try it next time.
Steam rooms have many other benefits
besides relaxing you and cleansing your skin. Steam rooms give you relief from muscle soreness
and stiff joints. These also help in enhancing the immune and blood circulation system.
Furthermore, it is effective in lymph detoxification and sinus congestion relief.
Hence, if you are a hypertension patient, you can also benefit from steam rooms if you take some
precautions.
