Sesame seed is a common household name and a popular flavouring ingredient in
Asian foods. It was one of the first crops to be cultivated by humans. What most people will not be
aware of is that this small seed has hidden a lot of benefits inside it, especially for people who
are suffering from high blood pressure. A study conducted by Annamalai University showed that when
hypertension patients were taken off their medicines and given sesame seed oil, their blood
pressure dropped to normal levels.
Sesame Oil Lowers High Blood Pressure
The patients in the study used sesame seed oil as their
cooking oil for three weeks, after which time their blood pressure started to reduce. Their
blood pressure became normal after using it for 45 days. Their blood pressure went back up
when they discontinued its use. According to the researchers, sesame seed oil is so beneficial
for high blood pressure because it contains vitamin E and sesamin.
Besides these two, sesame seed oil is also high in polyunsaturated fats that are
the good fats and help in lowering cholesterol. Its antioxidant nature also benefits high blood
pressure in an indirect manner.
Another advantage of sesame seed oil is that it has a high heat tolerance and
does not break down easily in heat. This is why it retains its valuable nutrients even when heated
at a high temperature.
Sesame seed oil comes in two varieties:
the dark and the light. The dark variety is made from
roasted sesame and has a strong flavour and is hard to adjust to. The lighter variety of oil has
a mild flavour and has a hint of sesame seed taste. Both varieties contain the same beneficial
ingredients.
Sesame seed oil’s advantages have been effectively proven by research. Its use
is not only beneficial in high blood pressure but also easy. It should be used as the sole source
of cooking oil or as frequently as frequently as possible.
There are many delicious dishes made with sesame seed oil that can be taken from
Asian cookbooks or online. Otherwise, try preparing vegetables and chicken in sesame seed oil and
