Blood pressure is the measurement of the force with which
heart pumps the blood in the arteries. A normal range of blood pressure is 120/80, where the
first number is the systolic reading and the second number is the diastolic reading. Systolic
represents the level of pressure when heart pumps. Diastolic is the reading of the blood
pressure when the heart is at rest between the beats. As blood pressure occurs without any
discernible signs, it is necessary for people to check it often. In this way, a person can be
saved from severe diseases like a heart attack or a stroke.
How One Can Take a Blood Pressure by Wrist
Taking blood pressure reading is not a very difficult
task. In order to get an accurate reading, it is better to avoid caffeine, alcohol and tobacco
for at least thirty minutes before taking your pressure. Moreover, take a rest and do not talk
prior to testing your pressure. This will relax your body. In order to keep a good circulation,
do not sit cross legged or with crossed arms. A good straight posture would be best. Make
certain that you note your blood pressure at the same time every day as your blood pressure
varies from time to time. Do not check your pressure right after an exercise session or when
stressed because your heart will be pumping harder at that time.
Rest your wrist on a flat surface so that it is at the
same level as your heart. Adjust the cuff of the blood pressure monitor because some machines
will not start to take the pressure if the cuff is not put on correctly or your arm is not in
the right position. The cuff should fit you snugly and get tighter as it inflates. The blood
vessels should be pressed to such an extent that the flow of the blood is stopped. The machine
will be able to read the pressure of the blood as it returns to the arteries, when the cuff
releases pressure.
While the machine is taking your blood pressure level,
make sure that you are sitting quietly and not moving around. When the reading is complete, the
machine will probably beep or flash. For the machine to work efficiently, read the information
about its usage that will be provided with it.
Take several readings at home and then go to a doctor with
your wrist machine. He can verify by checking himself whether the readings of your machine are
accurate or not.
If several readings of your blood pressure are above
140/90, then you need to consult a doctor immediately as you might be suffering from high blood
pressure. If with these readings, you are also experiencing dizziness, chest, back, jaw or neck
pain or trouble breathing, then you must call for immediate help.
