A Synopsis on Low Blood Pressure
|
|
When the heart pumps blood, the pressure exerted on the walls of the arteries is
called blood pressure. There are no definite or fixed parameters to designate the normal range of
blood pressure as it varies from person to person. However, 120/90 mm Hg falls with in the normal
range. When the reading is too low than this, then a person has low blood pressure, which is also
called hypotension.
A Synopsis on Low Blood Pressure
A variety of digital and non-digital devices have made it
much uncomplicated to check blood pressure. Its measurement is based on two numbers. The first
one is the systolic level and the second is diastolic reading. An inflatable cuff is used for
the checking of blood pressure. The cuff is wrapped around the upper arm and then inflated.
Then, the doctor, with the help of the stethoscope, listens to the first audible sound of the
heart beating. This is recorded as systolic and when this sound disappears, that point is
recorded as diastolic. Measuring it digitally is even easier as the device will measure itself
and give you an accurate reading.
Low blood pressure is caused by a number of reasons. Some of them are:
1. Wide or dilated blood vessels
2. Anaemia
3. Weak heart contraction or other heart diseases
4. Obstructed blood flow
5. Crash diet
6. Pregnancy
7. Over dosage of hypertension medication or side effects of other medicines
8. Endocrine disorders, diabetes or low blood sugar
Besides these medical reasons, a person can also suffer from low blood pressure
due to dehydration and in very hot weather. Women can also have hypotension if they get menstrual
cycle is heavy. Emotional condition also has an effect on one’s blood pressure. Some people
experience low blood pressure when they go through some emotional setback. Another cause is related
to spending too much time in a hot tub, or in a sauna.
All of these causes can lead to hypotension. Fortunately, recognising it is
comparatively easier than hypertension. Its most common symptoms are dizziness and palpitations.
Many people also experience tiredness, blurred vision, confusion and nausea. Some may even
faint.
If any of these symptoms are experienced consistently, it is necessary to visit
a doctor, who will focus on treating the underlying causes of hypotension. Low blood pressure can
create complications if it is left untreated too long. It can damage your heart and brain in the
long run. If it is chronic, then it may also cause Alzheimer type dementia. Even its symptoms can
be dangerous. If you are feeling too light headed, then you can fall and hurt yourself.
Fortunately, its prevention is very simple. All you have to do is take care of your diet and
exercise regularly.
